1. Call and rough scope -- You tell us what you're dealing with -- number of stumps, rough size, whether it's a single hedge line or a full paddock clear, and whether there's livestock, wet ground or watercourse access to think about.
2. Site visit -- For anything beyond a single small stump we come and look at it ourselves. On farmland that means checking ground bearing capacity, gate widths for the machine, stump diameter and species, and how close the nearest watercourse or drain actually is.
3. Fixed quote -- You get a price for the job as seen, not a day rate that runs up if the ground turns out soft or the root ball is bigger than it looked from the gateway.
4. Ground protection and access -- Where the machine has to cross a paddock or grazed field, we agree access routes and, where the ground needs it, use protection boards to spread the load and stop rutting or compaction across areas horses or livestock will be back on.
5. Grinding -- The grinder works the stump down to the agreed depth, working out and around the root flare on bigger field trees rather than just chasing the trunk straight down. Willow and poplar get extra passes across the root spread since that's where regrowth usually starts.
6. Clear-up and final check -- Chippings are moved or left as agreed, the area is walked and checked, and George or the crew on site confirms it's finished to what was quoted before anyone leaves.

On paddock and hedge-line jobs the stump work often can't be separated from tree work -- a hedge-line root ball might sit under a leaning ash that needs taking down first, or a field-boundary stump might need overhanging growth cleared before the grinder can even reach it. Because the crew holds NPTC certification across aerial tree work, chainsaw operation and rigging and controlled dismantling, as well as grinding itself, that kind of combined job stays with the same team from start to finish instead of being split between a tree surgeon and a separate ground-clearance contractor, which is the more usual arrangement.
